It's getting cold outside

had to put on some trackpants today

and once again i was wondering, do i have enough warm clothes for this winter when TSHTF

look around for whatever you have regarding winter clothing,

and ask yourself, is it enough if the power goes out

it's that time again to stop by the second hand stores and pick up my quota of trackpants and hoodies

December of 2007 I put in order for wool blankets, wool sweaters, wool pants, and wool socks with some online army surplus place. They were out of stock on most of it. The rest showed up in June of 2008. I had totally forgotten about it. Boy was I psyched when that stuff showed up in even though it was summer.

Still need to find some cheapo long underwear for daily around the home/street use. Save the good stuff for outdoor activity.

hats, balaclava, mittens, socks, footwear waterproofing, sweaters of natural wool, good quality rainsuit{grundens}. going to carry a few mre meal heaters with me this winter and explore the possibility of them as hand warmers. practice of pistol draw and fire with gloves/heavier clothing could be useful to practice this fall. thanks for the reminder cg

My woodstove only knows the power has gone out, if I go down to the cellar to load it using a flashlight in order to see.
Most winters I spend in shorts if I am staying inside.
Of course if I am outside cutting wood, that's another matter.

cold here too, got down to 47 last night and we have a frost freeze advisory tonight, this summer hasnt been consistently warm at all. garden sucked ,farms stifled from heavy cold rains. not going to be a good winter methinks.

Parts of Minn. and Wis. under frost warning

Parts of northeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin are under a late summer frost warning, and residents there should consider protecting their sensitive plants.

The National Weather Service is warning that a cold ridge of high pressure will settle over the border from Sunday night to Monday morning.

The weather service says that will create perfect conditions for a quick drop in the temperature into the mid-30s, and possibly below freezing in spots. The frost warning is set to expire at 7 a.m. Monday.

It comes during an unseasonable cold snap in the area.

The weather service reports the high temperature in the Eau Claire, Wis., on Saturday was 62 degrees — which sets a new record for the lowest high temperature for Aug. 29 for the town.

Even here in NW Indiana, they're predicting temps below 50 degrees tonight and tomorrow. That should be good for the tomato plants :452: This evening probably 25% of the audience left the concert in the park at intermission. Many of us were wearing flannel shirts and jackets -- not quite good enough. We left too, not because the entertainments wasn't good but because it was just uncomfortably cold. Kind of unusual for August.

Stone opposite here on the Olympic Peninsula.

Long, hot, dry summer

And still going on.

Now, in one way this is good because I

Got the garden in way late.

On the other hand, streamflows are down

To freakin' nothing, which does not

Bode well for the fish.

And, the Olympic glaciers are disappearing.

Now, you can deny global climate change

Until you are blue in the face,

But I must say that there is

Some major climatic shit going down here

In the Northwest, both on the land

And in the ocean,

And not for the better.

A chill in the air here this morning too. Shameless confession......I like the cold weather. Gets the bass in a feeding frenzy, deer season that much closer, grouse and rabbit hunting on the horizon, and some nice landlock salmon through the ice.

Chore Reduction Mode on! Some plowing and wood splitting, both rate high on the list of drinkability chores! :coolbeer:

Early in my preps, I purchased two sleeping bags that are rated to -15 degrees F and can be zippered together. They may spend the rest of our lives on the closet shelf. But I can tell you that I slept like a baby the night they arrived. Just knowing that I had them gave me enormous comfort -- well worth the price.

Check your thermostats: Farmers' Almanac predicts numbing cold for much of the country

LEWISTON, Maine - Americans, you might want to check on their sweaters and shovels — the Farmers' Almanac is predicting a cold winter for many of you.

The venerable almanac's 2010 edition, which goes on sale Tuesday, says numbing cold will predominate in the country's midsection, from the Rocky Mountains in the West to the Appalachians in the East.

For most of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the almanac predicts "bitterly cold and dry" weather. In the Dakotas and the Red River Valley region of Minnesota, "very cold and snowy" weather is expected.

Managing Editor Sandi Duncan says it's going to be an "ice cold sandwich."

"We feel the middle part of the country's really going to be cold — very, very cold, very, very frigid, with a lot of snow," she said. "On the East and West coasts, it's going to be a little milder. Not to say it's going to be a mild short winter, but it'll be milder compared to the middle of the country."

The almanac, which has been published since 1818, issues annual forecasts using a formula based on sunspots, planetary positions and the effects of the moon.

This winter, the 200-page publication says it'll be cool and snowy in the Northeast, bitterly cold and dry in the Great Lakes states, and cold and snowy across the North Central states.

It says the Northwest will be cool with average precipitation, the Southwest will be mild and dry, the South Central states will be cold and wet, and the Southeast will be mild and dry.

The almanac's forecast, however, is at odds with the National Weather Service, which is calling for warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the country because of an El Nino system in the tropical Pacific Ocean, said Mike Halpert, deputy director of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Md.

"The stronger El Nino becomes, the more confident and the more likely it will be the northern part of the country will have a milder-than-average winter," Halpert said.

The almanac and the Weather Service agree on their predictions of warmer-than-usual conditions across much of the country next summer.

The Farmers' Almanac, not to be confused with the New Hampshire-based Old Farmer's Almanac, has a circulation of about 3.5 million.

That sure is a beauty TN! Do you heat only on wood? Or is it a supplement? How long you figure this will last you? Being in TN, I don't imagine you burn through too much a winter when needed.

Either way, it reminds me of the saying: Getting wood warms you two ways, once when you get it, and once again when you burn it! You've been a busy man. Kudos!

I wouldn't imagine so either, I went an entire winter in TN without any heat. It wasn't comfortable but it wasn't deadly either. Lots of hoodies and layers of hoodies...

Gloves, most important. Then thermo-pac type boots with wool socks.
Get a pair of those insulated overalls. Grow as much facial hair as possible.

I've got help coming up this week and it should be a productive weekend.

Primary heat is wood....some propane backup. I'm shooting for 2 years worth this year ( 12-14 cords ). Gets pretty cool here sometimes. We're in a little zone that runs down the spine of the Appalachian Mtns that equals pretty far north latitude.

GW:

Little over 3 cords per shed...3 sheds = 10 cords + 2-3 cords stacked on the ground with tin covers.

Re: It's getting cold outside

sigh... yeah it gets pretty cold here. One of these years I'll move further south or west where I belong... the cold here just seems to never let up in eastern SD... western SD is much better in that regard. 3 months of truly warm weather per year is about it for this area.... simply moving to the western part of the state would increase that to about 6-8. I like my snow and cool weather, but dislike having 50 degree temps starting in September and lingering through May, and not having it rise above freezing at all for 2 months straight.

Of course all this has it's advantages... keeps out the riff-raff, and plenty of work available too.

Thanks Andy. I guess my imagined dimensions were off, but then that's why I asked. My first winter here but I'm guessing at least ten cords. Wood is also the main heat here, with a small wall mount of propane in each of the two wings and 1 on each side of the main living area. Those are just to knock the chill off when the wood needs stoked. Got up this morning at about 4 to see my bow hunter friends off and I'd guess it was sub 50 degrees, maybe like 48. It'll still approach 80 by afternoon though, so I'm not using any heat yet.

I'm pretty far south in the rockies so it doesn't get frigid like say up north in Colorado. Folks are expecting more than usual snow this year, but I really haven't heard a substantial reason why. Maybe because there is more rain this year than usual.

Those sheds are really nice Andy.

EDIT: I sit at about 7200 feet in a nice little plush valley.

Got the first cord in the basement last night. Today the second goes in. One more on Thursday and I should have a nice start for the season. Wood primary here as well with fuel oil back-up. Go thru about 80 gal per year on top of about 5-6 cord. Got two seasons worth split and ready to go with another 2 seasons in the round waiting for the maul. I typically split 2-3 years ahead. Preps and all.....

Last two nights have been in the high 40's to low 50's here. Feels like squirrel season. I'm ready.....

Cool mornings in central Ontario, but that familiar smell of autumn in the air is not here yet. 4 bush cords of maple wacked and stacked on the weekend. Fishing hut cleaned out and repaired. Deer plot cultivated and planted. Guns oiled. Bow tuned. Beer chill'n.

Six cords up, not counting half a cord in the furnace room.

Have a goodsized vintage woodburning furnace, in addition to fireplace

Inserts on both floors.

Another six or eight cords fallen, but not bucked

Or split, back in the woods.

Warms you seven times.

Falling it

Limbing it

Bucking it

Splitting it

Hauling it

Stacking it

Burning it
